Stove Installation — Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about getting a stove installed in Ireland.

How much does stove installation cost in Ireland?
The cost of stove installation in Ireland varies depending on the stove model you choose, the condition of your existing chimney or flue, and the complexity of the work required. A HETAS registered installer will carry out a site survey and provide you with a detailed, no-obligation quote tailored to your home before any work begins.
How long does stove installation take?
Most installations happen in a day or two. If your chimney needs significant work — like a new liner or a full flue system — it might take a bit longer. Your installer will give you a clear picture of the timeline during your site visit.
Do I need planning permission to install a stove in Ireland?
In most cases, no. Installing a stove in an existing fireplace or with a chimney liner is generally exempt development under Irish planning regulations. However, if you are adding a new external flue on a protected structure, or if other significant external alterations are required, you may need planning permission. Your installer will advise you based on your specific property.
What is a HETAS registered stove installer?
HETAS (Heating Equipment Testing and Approval Scheme) is the official body for solid fuel heating in Ireland and the UK. A HETAS registered installer has been trained and assessed to fit wood burning stoves, multi-fuel stoves, and inserts to the highest safety standards. They can self-certify their work under Building Regulations, so you're fully protected and compliant — no separate paperwork needed with your local authority.
What is the difference between a wood burning and multi-fuel stove?
A wood burning stove is designed to burn kiln-dried or seasoned logs only. A multi-fuel stove can burn logs, coal, peat, and other approved solid fuels — giving you more flexibility throughout the year. Multi-fuel stoves have a raised grate to allow airflow beneath solid fuels, whereas wood burning stoves have a flat base designed for logs. Both types are available in a wide range of styles and heat outputs.
Do I need a chimney liner when installing a stove?
Often, yes. A liner ensures flue gases are safely directed out and that your chimney is the right size for the stove. Your installer will assess your chimney during the site visit and tell you exactly what's needed. Older chimneys especially benefit from lining — it improves how the stove draws and stops leaks.
What size stove do I need for my room?
Stove output is measured in kilowatts (kW). The rough guide is about 1 kW per 14 cubic metres of space, but it really depends on how well your home is insulated, ceiling height, and how draughty the room is. Too big and you'll overheat the room and waste fuel; too small and it won't heat the space properly. Your installer will work it out during the site survey.
Can I get a stove installed in an apartment or rented property?
Apartments are rarely suitable — most don't have chimneys, and structural work needs approval from the management company. If you rent a house, you'll need your landlord's written consent. But don't give up. Get in touch with us and we'll connect you with an installer who can discuss what's actually possible for your situation.
How often does a stove need to be serviced?
Most manufacturers recommend a service once a year, ideally before winter kicks in. A service means cleaning the glass, checking the door seals, inspecting the baffle plate, and sweeping the chimney or flue. It's not expensive and keeps your stove running efficiently and safely.
